I am very excited about teaching this new design at Fynbos 2018 in Stellenbosch.
My workshop is set for Friday and Saturday (5 and 6 October). But I am definitely going to arrive early so I an take some classes myself.

Bo Kaap cottages with Catherine Knox
about 58 X 72 CM
CLASS REQUIREMENTS ETC:
Skill level: all
Our beloved BoKaap is a mind-boggling patchwork of brightly coloured cottages.
This class shows how a quilter can distil the spirit and portray it in fabric and stitch. Guided by a new design for raw-edged appliqué, we identify and select the main shapes, colours and details that capture the character of the scene. Aided by patterns for cottages and mountain, each quilter will create her/his interpretation of a clump of BoKaap cottages on the slopes of Lion’s Head. A playful approach will be welcome.
The class sample is in modern quilting style with simplified shapes, bright pastel hues and lots of white ‘negative’ space. Each quilter can ‘re-paint’ with a personal mood and colour-scheme.
We will then workshop different strategies for quilting so that the stitch-lines add to the look and meaning of the piece.
LEARNING
The story of the Bo Kaap’s cottages (culture, history etc)
Methods for adapting photographic images of grouped houses for use in patchwork and quilting – creating pattern, composition and perspective.
Effective colour choices.
Successful raw-edge fused appliqué (including use of freezer paper, soluble adhesives etc)
Shading with non-fabric media (eg coloured pencils etc).
Pros and cons of different types of batting
Machine quilting in the details (walking foot, free-motion darning foot) and the benefits and hazards of using fancy machine stitches.
Finishing – including signing, labeling, binding and/or block mounting a wall hanging. Finally: entering the piece in the National Quilt Festival 2019!
STUDENTS MUST PLEASE BRING:
FABRICS (generous allowances have been made – your finished piece will trim down to about 58cm x 72cm):
35cm x 85cm sky fabric
15 x 85cm foreground strip,
55cm x 85cm mountain fabric (which extends down under the cottages). The mountain and sky can be very pale (as in class sample) but could also be exciting with a dark starry sky and dark mountain.
70 x 85cm backing fabric; plus 24cm x 80cm in the same fabric for the hanging sleeve.
2.5cm x 2.65m binding strip cut on the straight, folded and pressed in half lengthways
FABRIC FOR HOUSES – Hand dyed solids work very well but this design could be exciting in shwe-shwe or small-print Bali fabrics, for example.
Some shapes are small so loosely-woven fabric (low thread-count) is not recommended
At least 6 house colours with variations for details. Bring contrasting colours in lights and darks. Scraps are ideal – you can cut the biggest house from a scrap 13cm x 24cm
OTHER SUPPLIES
70cm x 85cm appliqué paper (eg Heat ‘n Bond), Teflon ironing sheet, iron
1x1m design ‘wall’ (neutral coloured flannel on a Styrofoam board [if possible])
Optional: Inktense coloured pencils or Aquarelles – there will be a selection to borrow and try in class.
70cm x 85cm batting – thin or compressed batting recommended
Rotary cutter, ruler and mat, pencil
Basic sewing equipment
Sewing machine with all the basic requirements, including a walking foot (if you have) and a darning foot. Extension flex.
White, neutral and variegated machine quilting threads (suggest shades of grey for quilted ‘drawing’ lines).
